The
new ‘17th’ edition of the wiring regulations (BS7671) came into
effect on
1st July 2008.
One of the major changes in the new regulations is in the mandatory
use of
residual current devices. Whilst RCDs have been around for
many years, the new regulations require their use in many more
applications...
Under the new regulations all socket outlets
in a domestic installation must be protected by
an RCD with a trip rating not greater than 30mA.
Cables
concealed in walls or partitions at a depth of less than 50mm must
now be protected by a 30mA RCD if they are not mechanically
protected.
All
circuits in locations containing a bath or shower must now be
protected by an RCD not exceeding 30mA
All
circuits should not be connected to a single RCD as this would mean
a loss of power to the entire property if a fault developed on a
single circuit.
